WHAT: The provocative Afro-American artist Kara Walker presents FIGA at the DESTE Foundation’s “Project Space”, a former slaughterhouse on the island of Hydra.
Often humorous, Kara Walker’s work explores the tensions and power plays of race and gender relations. Walker engages in historical narratives, particularly the experience of African Americans in the South American anti-American, and the ways in which these stories have been suppressed, distorted and falsified. Hers is a continuous exploration of the brutal stories of colonialism and slavery and the political and psychological consequences that accompany the formation of identity in the contexts of violence and oppression. Free admission.
WHEN: From June 20-September 30. (Monday-Sunday 11am-1pm and 7pm-10 pm. Closed Tuesday.)
WHERE: Project Space, DESTE Foundation, Hydra, Epar.Od. Mandrakiou-Molou, tel: 210.275.8490, www.deste.gr/hydra/
