Want to treat yourself or your family to a really special theatrical event this Christmas, but don’t quite fancy something as traditional as the Nutcracker?
Opus Cactus, the long-running show by dance-illusionists MOMIX is just the ticket. This mesmerizing tribute to the American South West has travelled the world for over a decade and is coming to Athens for just 6 days this Christmas season (from December 21-26).
Known internationally for presenting work of exceptional physical beauty, MOMIX is a company of dancer–illusionists under the artistic direction of Moses Pendleton. Opus Cactus is a luscious sprawling fantasy that portrays nature through highly sensual and artistic dance where the landscape of the American Southwest is brought to life with Pendleton’s signature illusionistic style.
MOMIX transports audiences into a surreal fantasy world that’s full of surprises. Athletically-honed dancers manipulate their bodies and props in astounding ways. While there is no concrete story-line, the underlying narrative concerns the beauty of human form, the beauty of nature, music – and life itself.
In a seamless series of 19 vignettes, your senses will marvel as a girl in a hammock ties herself into a knot and then spins like a top. Eight-legged, glow-in-the-dark monsters slither hypnotically across the stage while smaller creatures zip around on skateboards – all to an ever-changing audio collage ranging from haunting American Indian sounds to The Swingle Singers, Brian Eno and Bach!
Opus Cactus is both optical illusion and confusion where you must expect the unexpected! It’s also an accessible introduction to dance art that’s suitable for everyone from dance aficionados to mainstream audiences and families. Children, in particular, will love the circus-like element of fun and magical props and costumes.
Opus Cactus performs at Pallas Theatre, Voukourestiou 5, tel: 210.321.3100, Athens, from December 21-26. (Performances at 5pm and 9pm. Christmas Day at 8.30pm only). Tickets are from €15 and are available from www.viva.gr
