WHAT: British actress Billie Piper gives a breathtakingly uninhibited performance in this radical new production of Lorca’s powerful masterpiece Yerma, about an infertile Spanish washerwoman whose desperation for a child leads her to commit a terrible act. Hot young Australian director Simon Stone has utterly contemporized Lorca’s 1930s rural tragedy by transplanting the action from conservative-minded Spain to today’s London with a heroine who is a journalist and lifestyle blogger in this latest National Theatre Live recorded broadcast from the Young Vic Theatre in London.
Billie Piper, star of the Doctor Who series, reportedly delivers a bravura performance in the title role, with one leading London theatre critic describing her as “earth-quaking”.
